Drumming and Dancing in Ghana
Come and experience African drumming and dancing at its finest. Ghana is well-known for its music, and the dancing that accompanies it. One can participate in these wonderful arts that have been performed for centuries.
Learn how villages use “talking drums” to communicate within the village and between different villages—a technique that is still in use today.
Learn some traditional songs, history and dance performed at outdoorings, weddings, funerals, festivals, etc.
Cape Coast hosts an array of talented musicians, and you can take a class with one of the only female master drummers.
DAY 1
Accra
Arrival at Kotoka International Airport. Guests will be met by our tour guide then transported to the hotel.
DAY 2
Accra
Briefing by tour guide after breakfast. An Accra City tour will include the purchasing of drums by participants. After lunch at our local restaurant, the day’s activities will begin with our first lessons in drumming and dancing.
DAY 3
Accra
Day begins with second lessons in drumming and dancing at the University of Ghana, Legon. Lessons will be continued after lunch at a restaurant, where local dished are served. End the day with dinner to a live band performance.
DAY 4
Aburi
Travel to the Aburi Botanical Gardens to continue lessons in drumming and also to relax and enjoy the natural environment with a large array of indigenous plants. After lunch at the Gardens, we descend the mountains into Accra. End the day with dinner to a live band performance
DAY 5
Accra
Visit the Accra Cultural Centre for more lessons in drumming. Take an afternoon break with a picnic on a beach. You can also freely practice your new drumming skills on the beachfront.
DAY 6
Accra – Cape Coast
Travel to Cape Coast along a coastline marked forts and several fishing villages. On arrival we visit the Cape Coast Castle, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A welcome barbecue by the best chefs in Cape Coast with tropical fruit drinks will be held in your honour at Kokodo (the house on the hill)
DAY 7
Cape Coast
This day begins with a trip to the Kakum National Park, 360 square Kilometers of natural rain forest and home to many rare birds and butterflies. Here, we will experience a walk along the canopy walkway. In the late afternoon, join in a drumming session at the Oasis Beach Resort. The day’s activities will be climaxed with dinner and live music at the Kokodo Guest House.
DAY 8
Anomabo
We take a day off drumming and dancing to relax on a beach. In the late afternoon, experience a walking tour through the Elmina township.
DAY 9
Cape Coast
Start the day with a workshop in drumming and dancing. Continue with a cooking lesson, where group will prepare a local dish for lunch. The evening will be spent with a barbecue on a beachfront resort.
DAY 10
Cape Coast – Kumasi
We set of for Kumasi 250 km north of Cape Coast through Assin Manso, the location of a slave river. On arrival, we visit the Manhyia Palace, seat of the Ashanti Kingdom.
DAY 11
Kumasi
Start the day with a visit to the crafts villages of Ahwiaa (for carvings) and Ntonso (for adinkra). Also visit the Kente village of Adanwomase to interact with locals and to learn traditional skills like kente waving, palmwine tapping and farming. End the day with lessons in drumming and dancing at the Kumasi Cultural Centre for two hours.
DAY 12
Kumasi – Akosombo
Check out of hotel after breakfast to start our trip to Akosombo with a stopover at a cocoa farming community. End the day on a riverfront resort
DAY 13
Akosombo
Start the day with a boatride along the Volta River for a great view of the man-made Akosombo Dam. End the day with a farewell dinner amidst drumming and dancing.
DAY 14
Akosombo – Accra
Return to Accra. We will still have time for some last minute shopping, lunch before checking into hotel.
