The Grand Mosque of Porto Novo-Benin, was built to resemble to 17th-18th century churches of Bahia-Brazil.
It was constructed by deportee slaves from Brazil after the Malé revolt. The mosque took a long while to complete and its believed have been built by the same master masons who built the Central Mosque of Lagos-Nigeria, an edifice from which it was modeled.
The Grand Mosque of Porto Novo, is one of the remainders of the Afro-Brazillian style architecture in West-Africa.
